Reward Deficiency Syndrome

Some brains run chronically low on the chemistry of reward — ordinary pleasures register faintly, and the day arrives flat. The sufferer is not sad, exactly; he is under-fed at the level of feeling, and he will seek stronger and stronger doses to feel normal: louder stimulation, bigger risks, more of whatever briefly works.

Understanding the mechanism breeds compassion where judgment used to sit. The addiction, the restlessness, the relentless pursuit of intensity — these are often not appetites of greed but attempts at self-medication by a system starving for the ordinary pleasure everyone else gets free.

This reframes the moral lecture. Telling such a person to simply stop is telling a hungry man to simply fast. The drive is not weakness; it is a deficit demanding to be filled — and it will be filled, destructively or constructively.

The constructive route exists: vigorous exercise, real accomplishment, deep connection, sunlight, music — the slow, honest sources of reward. They dose lower but they dose truly, and they do not bill you afterwards. The deficit is real. The choice of pharmacy is yours.
