Metachrosis Effect
The chameleon changes colour — but the interesting question is what for. Not to vanish, mostly; chameleons change to signal — mood, status, intention. The colour is communication, not camouflage.
People run the same system. Watch how speech, dress, and posture shift with the room: the vocabulary at work, the laugh at the party, the deference before the powerful. Some of this is hypocrisy, and some is humanity — a social creature signalling membership is doing what social creatures do.
The danger is losing track of which colour is yours. Signal long enough and the signal becomes the self; the man who has performed agreement for twenty years can no longer find his actual opinion. The mirror that only reflects others ends up empty.
So keep one room where no signalling is required — one friendship, one practice, one hour where the colour does not change. That room is not escape. It is calibration: the place where you check what your own colour actually was, before the next room tells you what to be.
