Mental Lab
Between the event and your response, there is a room where the response is manufactured. Most people have never visited this room; they live at its output door, receiving emotions and reactions like weather. The mental lab is the practice of going inside.
What is in the room? Instruments, mostly. The interpretation you gave the event. The expectation you brought to it. The fatigue you carried in. The event itself is usually a small thing on the table — the reaction was compounded from these other ingredients.
Visiting is a skill with a simple protocol: when a reaction surprises you by its size, rewind. What exactly happened, in camera terms? What did I add — meaning, memory, forecast? Which ingredient produced this much heat?
The reward of the practice is not calm — it is authorship. The person who visits the lab stops saying "that made me angry" and starts saying "I read that as an insult, and the reading angered me." Same anger. But now there is a door where there was a wall, and doors can be walked back through.
