Hot Emotions and Cool Solutions

Everyone knows you should not decide in anger. Fewer know why the advice is so hard to follow: in the heat of emotion, the hot state feels like clarity. The anger does not feel like a distortion. It feels like finally seeing things as they are.

This is the trap's cleverness. Every strong emotion arrives wearing the costume of truth. Fear feels like prudence; rage feels like justice; infatuation feels like destiny. The hot mind cannot see its own temperature — that requires a cool instrument, and the instrument is also hot.

So the rule must be set in advance, while cool, and obeyed while hot: no sending, signing, quitting, or accusing until the temperature drops. Not because the hot judgment is always wrong, but because you cannot audit it from inside.

Sleep on it is the oldest advice in the world, and it survives because nothing better has been invented. The cool morning is not a delay of the decision. It is the decision, finally being made by you.
