Ford's Fundamental Feedback Formula

Strip the name to its working parts and you get a formula as old as craft: act, measure, compare, adjust — repeat forever. Every improving system on earth runs on this loop, and every stagnant one has broken it somewhere.

Notice that the loop has four joints, and each can fail. No measurement: you are driving blind. No comparison: the numbers pile up unjudged. No adjustment: the verdict is filed and ignored. No repetition: one heroic correction, then back to sleep.

The assembly line made this visible — catch the error at the station, not at the shipping dock. But the formula belongs to everyone. The cook tasting as she goes, the writer reading aloud, the runner checking his time — all are running the loop.

Ask of anything you want to improve: where is my loop, and which joint is broken? The answer is usually embarrassing and always useful. Improvement is not a talent. It is a loop with all four joints working.
