Drucebo Effect

Everyone knows the placebo: the sugar pill that heals because the patient believes. Fewer know its darker twin: the warning that harms because the patient believes.

Tell people a harmless substance causes headaches, and some will get headaches. Read out the list of side effects and a fraction of the room develops them on the spot. The body does not only obey hope; it obeys expectation of every kind, including the poisonous ones.

The principle is one: expectation is a physical force. The mind's forecast of pain prepares pain; its forecast of sickness rehearses sickness. Belief is not a comment on the body. It is an instruction to it.

So mind what you plant in others — and in yourself. The casual "this always ends badly," the habit of naming illnesses at the first symptom, the grim joke repeated daily: these are doses. Expectation is medicine. Administer it like one.
