Babe Ruth Effect
Babe Ruth held the record for home runs. He also held the record for strikeouts. These two facts are not a contradiction; they are the same fact.
The principle is arithmetic. The man who swings hard misses often — and connects often. The man who protects his average by swinging carefully misses little and hits little. In many fields, total success is not bought with a high success rate. It is bought with a large number of attempts, paid for in failures.
Yet we judge by rate, not count. We praise the careful clerk who never erred and overlook the restless one who erred weekly and built the company.
So ask the right question of your own life: not "how often do I fail?" but "how often do I swing?" A low failure rate can be a confession — proof that you stayed near the fence where the balls never come. Strikeouts are the tax on home runs.
