Volume 1 · The Machine Between the Ears · Essay 11

Affective Misalignment

Two people share the same event and come home with two different feelings. One calls the party warm; the other calls it exhausting. Both are telling the truth.

The machinery is plain. A feeling is not produced by the event alone. It is produced by the event plus the person — their history, their hunger, their hopes that morning. Same input, different machine, different output.

Most quarrels are built on ignoring this. We argue as if feelings were photographs of the world, and therefore two honest people must hold identical pictures. They cannot. They can only hold honest ones.

So the next time someone's reaction mystifies you, do not correct it. Ask what machine produced it. "What did that mean to you?" is worth a hundred "But it was nothing!" It was nothing to you. That is precisely the point.
